The continent of Africa is made up of many countries.  Our web page will focus on the six countries addressed by our social studies standards.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) is a large country located in central Africa with a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.

The country is rich in natural resources such as copper, cobalt, and diamonds.

It has the Congo River which is used as a route for transportation and commerce.

The Congo has had a troubled history with civil war and its political situation continues to remain unstable today.



Egypt

A large African country located along the banks of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean coast.

The great Nile River runs the length of Egypt and empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

Most of the country is desert with almost all of the people living along the Nile River.


Kenya

Located along the eastern coast of Africa bordering the Indian Ocean.

A beautiful country known all over the world for its magnificent animals and rich savanna grasslands.

It has a relatively stable government although there have been some disputes in recent years.

Nigeria

A large nation on the coast of West Africa.

It has nearly every kind of habitat found in Africa.  The northern part of the country is close to the Sahara and is dry with sparse vegetation.  The dry land gradually gives way to grasslands and a tropical rainforest.

Its coastline is rich in oil but problems with a corrupt government has prevented most Nigerian people from benefiting from the country's oil wealth.


South Africa

Located at the very tip of Africa.

Most of the country is plateau with large stretches of grasslands.


The grassland areas are home to most of the animals we think of in Africa: lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and leopards.

The Kalahari Desert is to its north.

Republic of Sudan

Located just south of Egypt in southeastern Africa.

It is the largest country in Africa and is the largest of the Arab countries.

The Nile River flowss through Sudan, linking it to Egypt.

Political and ethnic problems have made it one of the most unstable countries in Africa.

Millions of Sudanese have been made refugees because of the civil wars in the country.
