Population Distribution

Location and climate affects where people live, the type of work they do, and how they travel.

Areas along the Nile River, northwest coast of Africa, West Africa, East Africa, and the eastern half of South Africa have the highest populations.

The Nile River provides a critical water resource allowing people to live along its banks.

The area along the northwest coast provides a wetter and milder climate allowing crops to grow.

In West Africa, early populations developed a system of agriculture that does not have a negative impact on the environment.

In East Africa, volcanic activity created fertile soil used for subsistence and cash-crop farming.

The eastern half of South Africa is based on an urban economy and the people work in the mining industry.

Rapid population growth is stressing resources in some areas of Africa.

The migration of refugees within countries and between countries is changing some population distribution patterns.

Urbanization is increasing as a result of the rural-to-urban migration.
